What Is the Amateur’s Code?

The Amateur’s Code is a set of guiding principles that describe the spirit and values of amateur radio. It reminds every radio amateur that good operating is about respect, learning, service, and cooperation — not just equipment and licenses.

This code has been shared by amateur radio clubs for nearly a century and remains just as relevant today.


The Radio Amateur Is:

CONSIDERATE
Never knowingly operates in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others.

LOYAL
Offers loyalty, encouragement, and support to fellow amateurs, local clubs, and the amateur radio community.

PROGRESSIVE
Keeps station equipment and operating skills well-maintained and efficient, and operates in a manner that reflects credit on the hobby.

FRIENDLY
Operates with patience and courtesy, and offers guidance and assistance to newcomers and fellow operators.

BALANCED
Practices radio as a hobby that does not interfere with family, work, school, or community responsibilities.

PATRIOTIC
Keeps station and skill
